Bank Robber Arrested: Uzi Sub-machine Gun Confiscated
A man suspected of robbing a bank at gunpoint in Taichung City July 20 was arrested in Pingtung County this morning after 6 days on the run. The suspect was found to be in possession of an Uzi sub-machine gun.

On the afternoon of July 20, the suspect, Mr Ou (歐), 44, who has previous criminal records including murder and public endangerment, allegedly entered a bank in Shalu District, Taichung City, and shouted “Robbery! Don’t Move!” then fired a shot into the ceiling. Ou then jumped the counter and stuffed NT$1.21 million into a bag before escaping on a motorcycle.
Police investigators found that following the robbery, Ou had ridden the motorcycle to a residence in Wuqi District, where he asked a friend to drive him to Taichung Station. Ou then took a train to Kaohsiung City. Ou transferred to the MRT and went to visit a friend who drove Ou to Changzhi Township in Pingtung County.
In Changzhi, Ou stayed in an unoccupied house owned by a friend, periodically going out on a bicycle to buy food.
Police gathered in the vicinity of the house this morning, and waited until Ou went to a breakfast shop next door. At 7:55am, at least 10 police officers rushed into the store and arrested Ou.
A search of the house turned up an Uzi sub-machine gun and 29 bullets.
According to media reports, the divorced father of three daughters had amassed debts in the tens of millions of dollars due to failed investments in the stock market, underground futures exchanges, and gambling.
Only NT$210,000 of the NT$1.21 million stolen cash was recovered.
