Bank Robber Arrested After Dropping the Money, Then Tripping over His Own Feet

Police arrested a man outside a bank in Tianmu, Taipei City, today after he committed an armed robbery but dropped the loot as he was running out the door.

After trying to pick up the money, the 40 year-old man named Lin tripped and fell, and was quickly arrested.

Earlier today, Lin staked out the bank by pretending he was inquiring about a foreign currency exchange. He acknowledged the guard, intending to make himself known to the guard so that he would be recognized as a customer when he came in later in the day, shortly before closing time to make the robbery.

At around 3:00pm this afternoon, Lin parked his scooter outside a branch of TC Bank and walked in with a replica pistol. However, a different guard was on duty, and the guard tried to stop him entering, as it was just one minute before closing time.

Lin Pistol-whipped the guard and demanded money from frightened bank staff. The staff handed over NT$500,000 which Lin put into a paper bag.

While the robbery was in progress, a woman ran out of the bank and called out “robbery!” alerting nearby police who were writing out a ticket for a traffic violation.

As Lin exited the bank, the money fell out of the bag and he stopped in an attempt to pick the money up.

When the police showed up, Lin attempted to run, but tripped and fell over. He was immediately restrained by the police officers.

Lin’s motivation for robbing the bank was a more than NT$20 million gambling debt.
