Bail denied for soldier who shot ex-girlfriend dead in Chiayi County

The Chiayi District Prosecutor’s Office has ruled that a man who shot a woman dead in the street in front of her family’s home yesterday, June 16, shall be kept in detention while the case remains under investigation.

According to the police investigation, the 23-year-old active-duty soldier, named Liang, took a bus from Taipei to Chiayi County’s rural Shuishang Township yesterday in an attempt to reconcile with a 22-year-old woman named Wang.

Arriving at around 5:00 pm, Liang called on Ms Wang who was staying at an aunt’s house in the township.

The two had a heated discussion in front of the house, and when Wang rejected Liang’s appeal to get back together, Liang drew a pistol and shot Ms Wang in the chest at close range.

As Wang collapsed on the streetside in a pool of blood, a male cousin alerted by the gunshot tackled Liang and restrained him, while the shooting victim’s aunt called the police.

Ms Wang lost vital signs at the scene of the shooting and was declared dead at the hospital at around 6:00 pm.

Liang was arrested on the spot, and found to be in possession of a modified pistol and seven bullets.

Liang was charged on suspicion of homicide, and offenses against the Guns, Knives, and Ammunition Act.

The Chiayi District Prosecutor’s Office today, June 17, ruled that Liang is involved in a felony homicide of which the lightest sentence exceeds five years imprisonment. The source of the weapon used has not been clarified, and there is the possibility of collusion. Liang could also be considered a flight risk. Therefore bail was denied, and it was ruled that Liang be held in detention and incommunicado as the investigation continues.
