American Teacher Dies After Scooter Accident

A 71 year-old American man working as a cram school English teacher died yesterday, after being in a coma since April 8.

At around 4:00pm, April 8, the man, identified only as David by local media, was riding his scooter on Jianping Road in Tainan City, when a 61 year-old woman named Chen, also on a scooter, crossed an intersection against a red light, causing a collision.

David, who was not wearing a motorcycle helmet, was knocked unconscious and remained in a coma.

David’s son, Cody, arrived in Taiwan on April 15, and signed consent forms on April 16, that gave doctors permission to remove life support and donate David’s organs.

Cody expressed his father’s wish to remain in Taiwan after his death. Cody also did not want to pursue criminal charges, and did not want anyone to go to jail over the accident. He said that his father would have had the same idea.

His name was David Clark; he was a longtime friend of mine and my wife Anne from Seattle. David loved Taiwan and was a very accomplished actor (specializing in the works of Shakespeare) and lover of language. Very dismayed at the manner of his passing – love to his family and friends.
