900kg amphetamine haul bound for Taiwan intercepted in Thailand
Police in Thailand intercepted a close to one-ton haul of amphetamines bound for Taiwan hidden in floor tiles at a port in Bangkok two days ago, Thai police revealed at a press conference yesterday, December 4.
The intercept was the result of a joint investigation by Thai and Taiwanese police agencies, media reports in Taiwan said today.
Thailand Customs said that the drugs were hidden in silicon floor tiles, with each of 161 tiles being filled with 4.5 to 6 kilograms of amphetamines.
The intercept was a result of cooperative efforts involving Taiwan’s Narcotics Control Division of the Bureau of Investigation, the Customs Department of Thailand, the Thai Anti-Narcotics Commission, the Royal Thai Police Drug Enforcement Bureau, and Thailand’s Armed Security Center.
On the afternoon of December 3, police raided a wharf in Kongdi District, Bangkok and intercepted the drugs before they could be shipped to Taiwan.
Bigger than hauls of 500 kilograms and 700 kilograms intercepted in Taiwan earlier this year; the case being solved even before the drugs could be shipped to Taiwan represents a success in attempts to prevent Taiwan being used as a transhipment point in the international illicit drugs market.
