7 Injured in Tainan City Bus Crash

Six passengers suffered minor injuries, and the driver was seriously injured, when a bus crashed into a steel column in Tainan City’s Xinying District today. It is suspected the driver suffered a heart attack before the accident.
At around 7:30am this morning, a Tainan City Bus veered across the center line into the path of oncoming traffic, mounted the sidewalk, knocked down a light pole and a fire hydrant, then slammed into the steel columns outside the Mega Securities Bank.
Passengers Perform CPR
A group of passengers cooperated to remove the driver from his seat and lay him in the aisle. The passengers then took turns to perform CPR on the unconscious man.
After ambulances arrived, paramedics took over CPR and a defibrillator was used in the ambulance as the driver was rushed to hospital.
The driver regained vital signs and is currently in the intensive care unit at Chimei Hospital.
Three male and three female passengers were also taken to Chimei Hospital and treated for bruises and abrasions.
Accident investigators said that there were no brake marks on the road, and according to the bus’ driving monitors, it appeared that the bus did not slow significantly before the final impact.
After the internal video monitors were accessed it was seen that the driver had fallen unconscious immediately prior to the accident. It is believed the driver had suffered cardiac arrest. Examination of the driver’s work log showed that he had just returned to work today after having a two day rest break.
