4 Killed in High-speed Single Vehicle Accident

Four people in their early twenties died in Changhua County in the early hours of the morning, when a car they were travelling in hit a pillar at high speed and burst into flames.

Two men inside the car were incinerated, while two women, who police suspect were not wearing seat belts, were thrown out of the car and also died at the scene. One body was found on the road about 30 meters from the car.

The white Toyota Altis, driven by a 22 year-old man named Zhan, was traveling on route 17 when the accident happened at around 2:30am at a Y-intersection in Fangyuan Towship. Police say there appears to have been little, if any deceleration before the vehicle plowed into the pillar of the Fuhai Temple’s temple gate.

As well as the driver, a 20 year-old man named Pan was seated in the left-rear passenger seat. Outside the car were a 26 year-old woman, also named Pan, and a 22 year-old woman named Yu.

The owner of the car, the driver’s father, said that his son loved to drive fast. Mr Zhan hadn’t seen his son for several weeks. He had called his son and urged him not to drive so fast after receiving notice of a speeding violation on June 6. This angered the young man to the point that he didn’t even return home to eat rice dumplings with his family during the Dragon Boat Festival last weekend. It was the last conversation the father and son had.
