4 Injured After Tour Bus Crashes During Illegal Overtake

Four people were injured, none seriously, after a bus collided with a truck while overtaking over double-yellow center-lines, on a wet and slippery mountain road in Ilan County this morning.

At around 7:40am, a Capital Tours coach carrying 40 passengers from Taipei City en-route to Wuling Farm overtook another vehicle on an approach to a blind curve on highway 7. Dashcam footage [See video below] from the vehicle the bus was overtaking shows the coach approaching the bend at speed, while a truck traveling in the opposite direction brakes hard and spins out of control. As the coach returns to the right lane, it hits the back of the truck.

The coach driver, Mr Lin, 42, was trapped in the vehicle. Passengers were unable to disembark from the right-hand side doors as the bus was stopped against the traffic barrier. The passengers opened an emergency exit on the left side. Passengers expressed relief that the bus had not caught fire.

Two passengers had chin and nose injuries. Four people, including the two drivers and two passengers were sent to Saint Mary’s Hospital in Luodong Township.

The driver of the truck, Mr Chen, 38, was found to have an alcohol blood level of BrAC 0.29mg/l and will face charges of public endangerment.
