33-year-old man who developed blood clots after COVID vaccination taken off life support

A 33-year-old man in Chiayi City became ill 10 days after receiving a COVID-19 vaccination, and died after doctors removed life support systems this morning, October 9.

The man, named Lee, had no history of chronic disease, and was vaccinated with the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine on September 10. Lee complained of headaches and chest tightness on September 19. When symptoms persisted the following day, Lee’s wife, a nurse, took him to the hospital.

After a medical examination, Lee was put into the intensive care unit, and the following day underwent cardiac catheterization surgery. Lee subsequently had two craniotomies to remove blood clots from his brain.

The hospital notified the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System, registering Lee’s condition as a possible serious adverse event.

Lee had another cardiac catheterization operation on September 28, and another surgery yesterday, October 8, according to a United Daily News report.

However, Lee’s condition following the surgery did not improve, and after consulting with Mr Lee’s family this morning, doctors removed life support systems.

Lee was declared dead shortly after 10:00 am.

The Chiayi City Health Bureau said they will assist Lee’s family with application for assistance from the Vaccine Injury Compensation Program (VICP).

*Just as deaths recorded as COVID-19 deaths are not necessarily caused by COVID-19, deaths recorded on the VAERS are not necessarily caused by vaccines.
