About 300 students and staff suffered abdominal pain and diarrhea after eating a school lunch delivered to 3 elementary schools in Taoyuan County, Thursday, November 17.

School administrators were not aware of the problem until the following day, when they noticed an extraordinary number of students and staff took the day off sick. The three schools affected were Dongmen, Ximen, and Qingxi Elementary schools.

On Friday morning, the three schools canceled lunch delivery from the supplier, and called the Health Bureau.

Health Bureau workers worked late into the night collecting vomit and stool samples.

Ximen Elementary School principal Xie Jiren said he had made an inspection of the lunch supplier’s premises earlier this year, and warned the supplier, after seeing condiments and food supplies stored on the floor.

City Council member Wan Mei Ling urged the Health Bureau to be more stringent in their investigations and inspections of school lunch suppliers.

Earlier this week, 91 students at an elementary school in Hsinchu County suffered food poisoning.
