200 Dogs Rescued from Animal Purgatory on the eve of Year of the Dog

Animal protection officers rescued 200 dogs and 7 cats from a property in Danshui District after a report was received from the Taiwan Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

New Taipei City Animal Protection and Health Inspection Office personnel acted after the TSPCA proffered photo and video evidence of dogs eating dogs, according to Liberty Times.

Inspectors, with the help of a number of veterinarians and animal protection volunteers, visited the property February 6, and found a rat-infested environment filled with the stench of death and feces. The surviving animals appeared to be walking skeletons wrapped in bags of skin.

The owner of the property, Mr Chen, told investigators that he was getting old and was unable to take care of the animals properly.

The case was handed over to the District Prosecutor’s Office where the owner of the property will be charged with offences that carry a maximum prison term of two years, and a minimum fine of NT$200,000.

Faced with having to care for such a large number of animals at once, the New Taipei City Animal Protection and Health Inspection Office are calling for members of the public to adopt a pet.

If you witness a case of cruelty to animals or inappropriate treatment of animals, call 1999 or (Taipei) 02-29596353.
