2 men killed in high-speed single-vehicle crash in Taichung City

Two men were cut out of the mangled wreck of a vehicle without vital signs and were later declared dead at the hospital, after a single vehicle accident in Taichung City this afternoon, Sunday, May 16.

The 43-year-old driver, named Wu, is suspected to have lost control of his vehicle at high speed while negotiating a curve on Dafeng Road, in Dali District, slamming into a tree on the central traffic separator.

The Toyota SUV was left wrapped around the tree after the crash.

The Taichung City Fire Department responded to reports shortly after 3:00 pm, and used hydraulic shears to cut the two occupants out of the car. Mr Wu and a 31-year-old man named Lin, were both without vital signs after suffering what firefighters described as horrific injuries. Lin and Wu were declared dead after arrival at the hospital.

A preliminary investigation noted that there were no brake marks at the scene of the accident. Video footage released showed the car sliding sideways after coming out of the curve, before slamming into the tree.

The results of tests for possible drunk driving have not yet been released at the time of writing.
