17-year-old, unlicensed driver dead after hitting water on road, losing control of vehicle in Changhua County

A 17-year-old male died after losing control of his vehicle, slamming into a brick wall and a utility pole, and overturning during a heavy downpour in Changhua County this morning, Sunday, May 30.

The Taoyuan City resident, named Lee, had driven to Xihu Township in Changhua County to visit friends early this morning. According to witnesses, and traffic monitor footage, the driver lost control of his vehicle when it hit water that had accumulated to a depth of around 30 centimeters on Changshui Road during a heavy downpour.

The vehicle drifted sideways before hitting a brick wall and slamming into the utility pole. The driver’s side door appears to have borne the brunt of the impact with the pole.

Police and firefighters arrived at the scene of the accident after receiving reports at 9:20 am.

Lee was pulled out of the wrecked vehicle unconscious and having lost vital signs, and was declared dead 40 minutes after arrival at Changhua Hospital.

According to the police investigation, Lee did not have a driver’s license, and was driving a company vehicle. The owner of the vehicle is now under investigation on suspicion of lending a vehicle to an unlicensed driver.
