11-year-old boy survives 15-floor fall

A boy in Kaohsiung City is in a serious condition, but conscious and able to speak, after falling from his family’s 17th floor apartment onto a second floor awning this evening, April 15.

At around 5:35pm, neighbors called emergency services after being alerted to the fall by the boy’s mother’s screams.

Firefighters who attended the incident on the corner of Guanxing Street and Mingcheng Road, found the boy conscious and writhing in pain. “My stomach hurts,” the boy said.

The boy suffered injuries to his head, abdomen, and left-arm. After stabilization, firefighters rushed the 5th-grade elementary student to Kaohsiung Medical University Chung-Ho Memorial Hospital.

Police investigating the incident found an open window in the living room and no signs of a struggle. A United Daily News report said the boy was alone at home at the time, and the mother arrived home shortly after the fall.

The boy is described in media reports as of Japanese nationality, and living with his Japanese mother and two siblings of a Taiwanese father.

The mother is not fluent in Chinese, Liberty Times noted, adding that teachers said that the boy is well-behaved, optimistic, and has good relationships with his family, teachers, and classmates.
