10-vehicle expressway pile-up leaves 1 dead, 2 injured in New Taipei City

One man died, and two people suffered minor injuries after 10 vehicles were involved in a crash on Provincial Highway 64 in New Taipei City this morning, July 14.

Police and fire fighters responded to reports of the pile-up at around 10:45 am in the westbound lanes at the Bali Interchange ramp. According to reports, two gravel trucks, 5 other trucks, and three passenger vehicles were involved in the crash.

Two people suffered minor injuries. A man named Hsu suffered a slight neck injury and was treated at Tamsui Mackay Memorial Hospital. Another man declined further medical assistance after being given first aid at the scene.

A 37-year-old man named Hu was trapped for more than two hours in the mangled wreck of his light truck. Hu was extracted from the vehicle shortly after 1:00 pm, and was rushed to hospital, but later pronounced dead.

The pile-up blocked both westbound lanes of the expressway, causing a traffic jam that backed up for more than three kilometers.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
