1 dead, 4 injured in 6-truck pile-up on West Coast Expressway

One person died and four were left injured after a semi-trailer hit a road construction vehicle then plowed into five other trucks on the West Coast Expressway (Provincial Highway 61) in Taichung City this morning, May 4.

Taichung City Fire Bureau received a report at 10:23 am that a number of vehicles were involved in a traffic accident at the 150.9 kilometer mark in the northbound lanes of the expressway in Qingshui District, and that two people were trapped in their vehicles. The fire bureau dispatched 8 fire engines, 3 ambulances, and 27 personnel to the scene of the accident.

Five injured people were rushed to hospital, of which one, a 62-year-old man named Chen, had no vital signs on arrival. Chen was declared dead at 12:12 pm.

A 60-year-old man, named Lin, was unconscious and suffering a hematoma of a lower leg, a fractured wrist, and a head laceration. Lin is currently in the intensive care unit. Three other injured were conscious and are being treated for laceration injuries.

The accident completely blocked the northbound lanes, and traffic was diverted off the expressway. The National Highway Administration expects the site to be cleared and traffic to resume by around 2:00 pm. The cause of the accident is still under investigation by the police.
