Torrential Rain Lashes Northern Taiwan: Flash Floods, Landslides and Lightning Strikes Cause Havoc
Planes were grounded at Taipei Taoyuan International Airport this morning June 2, as a lightning strike damaged a radio navigation system, and blackouts and floods affected operations at the airport. A total of 104 flights were affected when flights were suspended a little before 9:00am. Flights resumed before noon, after the navigation system was repaired.
In other areas of northern Taiwan, thunderstorms brought torrential rain causing local flooding. At 11:45 a rock-slide blocked traffic in both directions on the Su-Hua Highway. Emergency clearing operations saw the road reopened at 1:15pm.
In New Taipei City’s Linkou District, the a newly opened Mitsui Department store and shopping mall had to cease business for the day after floodwaters rushed in despite workers efforts to sandbag the entrance.
The Central Weather Bureau issued an extremely heavy rain warning for 7 cities, including the capital Taipei.
Yesterday, Taipei was affected by extreme heat with the first day of June seeing 38.7 degrees Celsius, a record high temperature for the month since record-keeping began in 1896.
