Tainan City’s First Electric Bus Service
Tainan City officials launched the city’s first electric bus service yesterday, March 22, 2016. Nine electric buses will service the new 11 kilometer route at 20-30 minute intervals. The route covers Tainan Train Station, National Cheng Kung University, National Cheng Kung University Hospital, shopping districts, and the Anping historical district.
Mayor William Lai expressed the hope that eventually all gasoline buses servicing the 108 bus routes in the city will be replaced by electric buses.
A Department of Transport spokesperson said the low-floor buses have an operating range of 180 kilometers when fully charged.
The buses were introduced as part of the municipal government’s drive to make Tainan City a ‘low carbon city’. The city also wants to reduce particle emissions. The mayor spoke about the city’s efforts to increase vehicle inspections, and urged residents to reduce the amount of incense and paper money burned during religious ceremonies. He stressed that meeting the goal of a low carbon sustainable city needed the support of all the people.
