Pregnant Mum and Toddler Survive Crash and 50 Meter Plunge

A female driver crashed on a mountain road in Nantou County yesterday, slipping 50 meters into a valley. Fortunately, the 7-month pregnant woman and 2 year-old child suffered only superficial injuries, and were rescued more than two hours later.

Ms Zhang, 40, was driving a Jeep with her 2 year-old daughter on board when the accident happened at around 5:00pm. Zhang had been on her way the local elementary school to pick up her children.

When Zhang had failed to return home at 7:00pm, her concerned husband went out to find her. Mr Zhang spotted marks that suggested a car had gone over the edge, and called emergency services.

Ten emergency vehicles from Puli Fire Station and Mountain Search and Rescue were mobilized. The mother and child were located and found to have suffered only cuts and bruises. The pair were pulled up to the road on a stretcher.

Ms Zhang at first refused further medical treatment after receiving first aid at the scene. However, paramedics convinced her to take the ambulance to a local medical clinic to check the health of her unborn child. A medical examination confirmed that the accident did not affect fetal health.
