Police Block National Freeway to Make Massive Drug Bust

National Highway Police yesterday used four patrol cars to block the northbound lanes of National Freeway 3 in Taoyuan, causing a 3 kilometer-long traffic jam, allowing Coast Guard and police investigators to intercept drug traffickers carrying 181 kilograms of ketamine.

At around 4:00pm Friday, August 4, coast guard officers from the Northern Coastal Patrol Office in a joint operation with Taipei City and Taichung City police followed suspects driving two cars, one described as a black Mercedes Benz from Taichung towards Taipei City.

A total of 42 officers were involved in the operation. The investigating officers originally planned to make a swoop when the traffickers stopped at a rest area. However, after the drug runners failed to stop, the officers made a request via the Taoyuan District Prosecutor’s office to have National Highway Police set up a road block at Longtan.

Highway police dispatched 4 highway patrol cars, each taking one lane, to slow down and bring traffic to a stop.

Police officers then approached the suspect vehicles from in front and behind, and smashed the windows, arresting the suspects in front of astonished motorists who described the scene as being like something out of a Hollywood action movie.

181 kilograms of ketamine was found in the back seat and trunk of the Mercedes Benz packed in fruit boxes and three suspects were arrested.
