Human Remains Found in Archeology Dig May be European

Spanish and Taiwanese archaeologists excavating a site on Heping Island in Keelung City unearthed 4 sets of human remains, including a complete skeleton, Monday, November 8.

Spanish archaeologist ELENA SERRANO said the method of burial suggests the skeleton may be European. The body was laid on its back with hands folded over the chest. The feet are to the east, and head to the west. Europeans buried people this way so the person could rise facing the sunrise on resurrection day.

The archaeologists have made four excavations at the site since 2011. The present dig began in mid September, but up till now they had only found a few tiles. The skeletons were found two meters down in a layer of rock which once formed the courtyard of a church.

Spain occupied the site for a brief period from 1626 until they were usurped by the Dutch.
