A driver in Kaohsiung left the scene of an accident this morning after slamming into a scooter at high speed and seriously injuring a woman before careering into a lamp post and seriously damaging his own car.

At 4:15am police were called to the scene of the accident in Qianzhen District (前鎮區) where they found the injured woman named Lai.

Ms Lai suffered head injuries and multiple fractures, including a fractured pelvis.

Police found the car’s airbag had been deployed but there was no sign of the driver.

On tracing the license plate number, police found the car belonged to a man with previous convictions for drugs and firearms offenses.

Police arrested a 35 year-old man named Yang at around 9:00am this morning. Mr Yang showed no remorse for his crime and was found in possession of a large quantity of amphetamines.

Yang was seen on video angrily remonstrating with the family of the victim at a police station after his arrest. “Why shouldn’t I run away,” he shouted. “I was bleeding, so can’t I go and see a doctor?” he demanded.
