2 Dead in Single Vehicle Crash

A taxi driver and his son are dead after the driver lost control of his car at high speed on a highway offramp in Ilan County last night.

Mr Lee, 56 and his 23 year old son were returning home to Ilan from Taipei City at around midnight when the accident occurred near the Ilan Interchange on Highway 5.

The taxi appears to have hit a concrete traffic separator at the top of an off-ramp before flipping and rolling.

Firefighters had to cut the men out of the wrecked vehicle. The men showed no signs of life at the scene and did not respond to efforts to resuscitate them. They were declared dead at the hospital.

Lee senior commuted to work in Taipei daily, while Lee junior attended university in Taipei City.

Police who accessed traffic monitors said the video footage showed there were no other vehicles involved in the accident, and the cause of the accident appears to be inattention.
