1 Dead, 12 Injured in Drunk Driving Accident

A driver in New Taipei City’s Hsinchuang District plowed into scooter riders and a pedestrian, leaving 1 dead and 12 injured this evening, Monday, March 6. Police at the scene measured the driver’s blood-alcohol level at 0.59mg/L.

The 37 year-old driver, surnamed Tsai told police that his brakes had failed. However, police found that not only was Tsai drunk, he was driving without a license, after having it revoked for drunk driving last year.

Tsai, who works for a food products company, had dinner and drinks with customers in Taoyuan County’s Guishan District, before departing for his home in New Taipei City’s Bali District. He was traveling on Zhongzheng Road at around 6:40pm when he hit the group of scooter riders stopped at the intersection of Mingzhi Road.

A sixty year-old man surnamed Zheng was found without signs of life at the scene and pronounced dead at the hospital. Three people are described as seriously injured, and 9 as suffering light injuries.
